Jerry Beck staat bekend als animatiedeskundige en is onder andere beheerder van het animatieblog Cartoonbrew. Zijn nieuwste boek is The 100 Greatest Looney Tunes Cartoons, met een voorwoord van Leonard Maltin. A.V. Club is niet echt positief: ‘The book comes off as a rather sad collaboration between a publisher in search of a gift book for coffee tables, and a writer/editor reluctant to insist on a prose-heavy tome. What the world really needs is Beck’s 1994 long-out-of-print classic The 50 Greatest Cartoons: As Selected By 1,000 Animation Professionals in a revised, expanded, updated edition. That’s the book that made the case for animated shorts as an essential 20th-century art form, sparking a conversation that could last readers a lifetime.’ Animated Views is ook kritisch (het boek is meer een fraai uitgevoerde ‘trip down memory lane’ dan een uitvoerig naslagwerk), terwijl Saturday Morning Central een stuk positiever is.

50 jaar na Psycho

Het is Hitchcock wat de klok slaat dezer dagen bij PopMatters, en dat naar aanleiding van de 50e verjaardag van Psycho. Dagelijks wordt z’n filmografie behandelt, maar daarnaast zijn er nog vele, vele artikelen. Zoals het verschil tussen de Engelse en Amerikaanse Hitchcock, de geboorte van de Britse geluidsfilm met Blackmail, of de afwezigheid van joden in zijn WOII-films. Dagelijks volgt meer!

Film Noir: The Encyclopedia

De eerste editie verscheen al in 1979 en de voorlaatste is van 1992, dus werd het wel tijd voor een nieuwe versie van Film Noir: The Encyclopedia van Alain Silver, Elizabeth Ward, James Ursini and Robert Porfirio. In bijna 500 volop geïllustreerde pagina’s wordt de Noir-canon onder de loep genomen, onderverdeeld in The Classic Period en Neo Noir.

De makers definiëren het genre als volgt:
‘Film noir is literally ‘black film,’ not just in the sense of being full of physically dark images, nor of reflecting a dark mood in American society, but equally almost empirically as a black slate on which the culture could inscribe its ills and in the process produce a catharsis to help relieve them.’

Noir Journal noemt het ‘the acknowledged bible of the film noir movement, unsurpassed in its erudition, range, and authority since its first publication‘. Big Hollywood zegt: ‘While there is no shortage of material on film noir, never before has there been so much of it in one place. Film Noir: The Encyclopedia is a must have for any fan of the genre since it works as an in-depth version of the Internet Movie Database.’

Hollywood on the Hudson: Film and Television in New York

Een ‘zwart gat’. Zo noemt professor Richard Koszarski de geschiedenis van de filmindustrie in New York in de jaren tussen de eerste en tweede wereldoorlog. Algemeen werd aangenomen dat film ontstond en gedijde aan de Oostkust, tot het in de jaren tien z’n biezen pakte en naar Hollywood vertrok; pas eind jaren zestig keerde de filmindustrie terug naar de hoofdstad. In de tussenliggende periode gebeurde er zo goed als niets. Althans: dat idee was er tot Koszarski zich op het onderwerp stortte met als resultaat Hollywood on the Hudson: Film and Television in New York from Griffith to Sarnoff. Want: ‘decades of continuing production on the margins of mainstream filmmaking kept studio buildings and trained technicians afloat, maintaining an infrastructure that was primed to resume producing feature films when the “Dream Factory” era crumbled. In the meantime, the metropolis kept busy churning out educational and industrial films, niche movies for black or Yiddish-speaking audiences, newsreels, animation and the occasional stab at independence.’ New York richtte zich dan misschien niet het meest glamoureuze deel van de filmindustrie – speelfilms – maar bleef niettemin springlevend.

Of voluit: You Couldn’t Ignore Me If You Tried: The Brat Pack, John Hughes, and Their Impact on a Generation. Fijn: titels die de inhoud compleet dekken. Met behulp van vele interviews schetst schrijfster Susannah Gora (die zelf een slideshow presenteert) oeuvre & invloed van de vorig jaar overleden John Hughes (The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pretty in Pink).
Popmatters is er overigens niet van overtuigd dat het type films waarmee Hughes bekend werd een lange levensduur hebben: ‘I’m simply not convinced of their long-term appeal as anything other than a kind of cultural phenomenon. I hope I’m wrong. They deserve a life. This book does, too.’

Victor Fleming: An American Movie Master

‘Some filmmakers can be categorized by genre… Fleming tackled them all. He pioneered the buddy picture and the odd-couple romance. And he varied his style according to his subject matter, from the visual poetry of location pieces like The Virginian to the verismo of Red Dust. He was known for his technical mastery, but his greatest achievement in film after film was establishing an emotional purity that could unify even the many-splendored whimsies of Oz and the multi-hued epic melodrama of Gone With the Wind.’

Toch is Victor Fleming, want daar heeft bovenstaande quote het over, een grote onbekende. Oorzaken hiervoor kunnen gevonden worden in het feit dat Fleming niet aan zelfpromotie deed, vroeg stierf, anderen er met zijn prestaties vandoor gingen en hij lang gezien werd als niet meer dan een competente studiokracht. Het was reden voor Michael Sragow om Victor Fleming: An American Master te schrijven. Een groot retrospectief deze weken bij Film Forum moet ook helpen het heersende beeld van Fleming bij te stellen.

Napoleon – The Greatest Movie Never Made

Uitgeverij Taschen heeft flink wat erg fraaie (en dure) filmboeken op z’n naam staan. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan de rijk geïllustreerde boeken over regisseurs als Paul Verhoeven en Michael Mann, of speciale uitgaven als The Godfather Family Album en The Stanley Kubrick Archives. Voortbordurend op laatstgenoemde is Stanley Kubrick’s Napoleon: The Greatest Movie Never Made. Voor wie een aantal jaren geleden naar de tentoonstelling rond het werk van Kubrick in Gent is geweest, kon al zien hoeveel gedegen research (denk aan 15000 locatiefoto’s of 17000 dia’s van Napoleon gerelateerde beelden) er in dit nooit voltooide filmproject is gestoken.

In het dikke boek zitten meerdere kleinere boekjes waarin onder andere de correspondentie van Kubrick, kostuumstudies, locatiefoto’s, researchmateriaal en scenarioversies, samen met de laatste scriptversie, te vinden zijn. De enkele kopers (de oplage is beperkt tot 1000 stuks) krijgen tevens toegang tot een online database waarin enorme hoeveelheid Napoleongerelateerde beelden te bezichtigen zijn. Eerdaags kan het voor €500,- op uw koffietafel liggen…
